Video Book Club: Managing Transitions March 30 2010

If you’re a leader, you have to deal with change on a regular basis. If you’re a leader, you need to get your own copy of William Bridges’ book, Managing Transitions. It’s a classic and an invaluable resource in helping you think through and develop a plan for productively getting your organization through change. It’s full of tips, frameworks and checklists that will help you organize your thinking, communication and action plans.

In this week’s Video Book Club, I share a couple of my favorite lessons from my dog eared, marked up copy of Managing Transitions.

If you’ve read the book, what’s your favorite or more useful take away from it?

Scott – One of my favorites is "The First 90 Days" by Michael Watkins. Chapter 3 deals with transitions using a "STaRS" model: Start-up, Turnaround, Realignment, and Sustaining Success. On the surface, it sounds like it has some similarities to what you discussed in your videoclip with regards to the four P's in Managing Transitions.

Great book choice and post, Scott. My most useful takeaway from Bridges is the metaphor of the trapeze. Letting go of one trapeze, flying through the air, reaching out to the next one, and the obvious anxiety that this process might produce. As a leader, one may even be more ready and informed about upcoming changes than those around you…. The leader may leap out to the next trapeze and unknowingly make the gap even wider by not looking back to make sure the trapeze to get to the other side swings back to those waiting….
